Turin

View of Turin from a look out spot above the city

Today we spent in Turin which is a beautiful city with huge squares, wide streets, imposing buildings and statues and lots of history.  Our local guide was very enthusiastic and gave us a good tour, taking us through the streets, visiting churches including the one which houses the shroud of Turin, some attractive old shopping arcades and pleasant pedestrian areas.

The weather was warm but not too hot and we enjoyed lunch sitting outside plus really tasty coffee.  As it was Monday the shops were closed until 3.30pm which was a bit of a blow for the shop windows displayed some lovely clothes.  We had to make do with just window shopping for the most part which was a little frustrating but did mean that it is worth considering a weekend in Turin some time in the future.  There are tourists of course but as the town is spacious it doesn’t feel too crowded and one day was not enough to do all there is to do and all there is to see in the city.

Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy and must say I had thought of it being industrial.  Sure, there is a lot of industry but the city centre is so full of monuments and history, can throughly recommend it.  We peered into the Teatro Regio foyer and there was classical music playing through loudspeakers outside which was a nice touch.

Tomorrow we’re heading for Alba, truffle country which is not far from Bra (still haven’t got used to that name).  But now it’s goodnight from me.
